How not to sell a car
Today, Emily and I were going to test drive cars. At first we were interested in checking out Mazdas. We currently drive a Toyota and have greatly enjoyed it. So we thought we would give Mazda a chance to win our loyalty. That was until we learned from a Mazda salesperson what I’d like to call “how not to sell a car”.
- Complain that it is hot (really? It is hot in Florida?)
- Stop caring about me as a customer when I say that I am not buying today
- Complain about your meager commission
- Tell me about your children instead of the car
- Tell me stories about previous customers who did not buy from you
- Criticize the other dealerships and brands of cars
I really don’t think any of the points above are to much to ask for. It would have been a great opportunity for Mazda to make a chink in the brand loyalty that we have towards Toyota.
On a more positive note, we then drove to the Toyota dealership. Since great service often goes unnoticed, I’d like to give my thanks (and hopefully future business to) Courtesy Toyota on Semoran and University. The salesman was extremely helpful and didn’t pressure us in any way.
Car buying can be a such a pain. Salespeople, please realize that you’re position is not to complain but to represent your products the best you can.
